McDonald made his first class (and Currie Cup debut) for the Kings in their 60–19 loss to the Golden Lions in Johannesburg in 2014.
He joined Wellington-based side Boland Cavaliers for the 2016 Currie Cup qualification series.
He spent one year with Boland before he joined Kimberly-based side Griquas.
