ANALASYS | How did England score that last try?
- 382
England claimed a remarkable 26-25 win against France in an extraordinary encounter in London.
Half time score was 7-all but in the 2nd half the game opened up with England running in four tries and France three.
The pick of them all was the winning one England scored in the 78th minute.
We took a look at the build up, the setup and the execution
1. In the 77th minute, Alex Mictchell kicks a box kick. Thomas Ramos gathers, has enough time to kick but opts to run. Fin Smith, makes and important leg tackle (green arrow). Because the tackle is around the legs, Ramos goes directly to ground and Ben Earl wins the penalty.
2. F Smith does not push France back all the way until their own 5m (Green circle), but you can pick up the group of England players in a huddle calling the play and making sure everyone knows what is going to happen.
3.From the lineout, the England forwards setup a maul and make 2-5 meters. When the referee instructs England and Mitchelle to use it (red circle), Nolan Le Garrec (green circle), the substitute scrumhalf, is situated on the blind side, and this is important to note as the scrumhalf is usually behind the defence line making any tackles the first line missed.
4. A long and accurate pass from Mitchell goes to Ollie Lawrence who is at first receiver. Lawrence runs towawards Yoran Moefana with Tommy Freeman running down Pierre-Louis Barassi's channel.Louis Bielle-Biarrey (black dot), cannot defend towards the inside as Marcus Smith is opposite him. One can also see the gap F Smith and Elliot Daly is working towards.
5. Lawrence plays behind Freeman's back to F Smith. In the shot you can see Daly outside Smith with Bielle-Biarrey still outside, opposite M Smith.
6.What Moefana and Barassi do very well is "swim" through the attackers. In an ideal defensive setup, Moefana would go for Smith and Barassi for Daily but Smith is already moved too far away from Moefana.
7. Because Moefana is not going to get to F Smith, Barassi shoots to get him but just before contact, F Smith hangs the ball up for Daly who attacks that space between Barassi and Bielle-Biarrey.
8. Dupont manages to get to Daly as he breaks the line but the momentum takes him over to score.
Worth mentioning
The pass from Mitchell was infront of Lawrence which means the England center did not slow down to catch the ball.
The setup from the England backs meant the pass cut out the first defender.
Damian Penaud joined the maul so he could not cover at the back
Thomas Ramos stayed wide to cover Ollie Sleightholme.
People would say that Bielle-Biarrey had to come closer but with M Smith's quick feet, he would have beaten him on the outside.
The England maul was making meters so Penaud had to join, otherwise he could have made the tackle on the outside.
All in all a great try scored by England and a better way to close off a great win!
