After finally qualifying to play for Ireland, he made his debut against his native South Africa. In October 2013, Strauss was diagnosed with a heart condition which required surgery. It appeared to be the end of his season but he made his comeback early in January for Leinster. After a strong second half to the 2014/15 season Strauss completed his comeback by being named on the Irish squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Strauss has 17 Ireland appearances under his belt, he will try force his way into the Ireland squad for the Six Nations tournament. Strauss signed a new contract with Leinster Rugby that will see him remain at the club for the 2017/18 season. As of 5th April, Strauss has played 143 times for Leinster, scoring 11 tries.
At the end of the 2017/18 season Strauss confirmed his retirement having represented Leinster over 150 times. He helped Leinster win the Champions Cup and PRO14 double in his final season with the side.
