In June 2011 Reed was named in the Wales national rugby union team 45 man training squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup and made his full international debut for Wales versus Scotland on 12 February 2012 as a second half replacement.
He went on to play against the Wallabies in the Wales autumn tests at the Millennium Stadium and was part of the 2013 Wales team that went on to win the Six Nations Championship. Reed also toured Japan with Wales in the summer of 2013.
In June 2016, Sale Sharks announced to have signed the Welsh international lock on a two-year deal.
In February 2017 Lou's stay with Sale was cut short when he left the club, with mutual consent
