Grown in South Africa, Van Zyl is in his seventh season with Benetton. Previously, he had always played in South Africa, first with the Pumas in the Currie Cup, then with the Free State Cheetahs in the Super 14 and Currie Cup He won with the Cheetahs Currie Cup three occasions of the National Italian.
