The younger brother of Pierre-Gilles Lakafia and son of former French javelin champion Jean-Paul Lakafia, Raphael played for France in the 2008 IRB Junior World Championship and scored three tries against Japan.
June 2016 saw him being selected in the France 28-man squad for their tour of Argentina before being signed by Toulon for the 2017/18 season.
As of the 2018/2019 Champions Cup, Lakafia had 36 European Cups appearances scoring 2 tries and 10 points.
