Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Tupou has tried his hand at both professional Rugby League and Union despite only being born in 1990. Having represented the North Queensland Cowboys in the 2010 NRL competition, Tupou made the switch to Union in 2012 when he signed up with the Western Force to compete in Super Rugby.
He left Australia in 2013 and made the move to Japan representing the Red Sparks. He was included in the Sunwolves 2017 Super Rugby squad.
He opted to play his international rugby in Japan and made his debut against Ireland in June 2017.
In January 2018 he was included in the Sunwolves Super Rugby squad having made 8 appearances in 2017, scoring one try.
