Born in Manchester, England, Holmes attended the Sanbach School and was scouted by Sale Sharks while still attending secondary school.
A lock forward by trade, Holmes spent a year with the Golden Lions in South Africa during the 2011/12 season before resigning with Sale Sharks.
On 1 May 2014, Holmes signed a permanent deal with Rotherham Titans who compete in the RFU Championship
