Spedding began his professional career in South Africa where he played 10 matches at flyhalf for the Sharks and accumulated 58 points in the process. In 2008, he signed for French side Brive, and made 79 appearances and while scoring 61 points. In 2012 he made a big move to Bayonne where he has become an vital senior player.
His performances for Bayonne earned himself a call up to the French national side in 2014 where he impressed enough to be included in the Six Nations Championship squad in 2015. Starting a number of games in that tournament, Spedding was then selected in the squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
In June 2016, he was called into the French national team that competed in the 2016 November Tests. Played in two of these tests against Samoa & Australia.
His performance at the competition earned him another spot in the France squad for the 2017 Six Nations tournament. Spedding has played in 6 Six Nations matches - scoring 3 points.
Spedding has been included in the France squad to face South Africa in a three-match series in June 2017, the fullback has made 20 previous appearances for France - scoring 26 points
Spedding featured regularly for Clermont during his time with the club before he was not re-signed by the club following a change in the Top14's foreign player regulations.
Ahead of the 2018/19 season he signed with Castres.
He made 12 appearances for Castres during the 2018/19 season scoring 18 points while taking his Champions Cup tally to 44 and 56 points.
