The former Castlerock College star was highly rated at the tail end of the 2001 Leinster Senior Cup season with his flowing running style and composure under pressure guiding the famous Black & Red to yet another title. Few who were there to witness his flawless performance off the tee in the Lansdowne Road final will forget the day.
Many had assumed that O’Carroll-Kelly would go on to partner his erstwhile senior cup rivals Brian O’Driscoll and Dorse for both Leinster and Ireland. His running in open field had already earned him the nom de guerre “The White Lomu” which certainly would have seen him start in favour of pedestrian O’Gara.
It was not to be for this beloved son of South Dublin however and his stellar career never materialised.
