Thomas Young

18th May 1992 1.80m/102kg Openside Flanker

Thomas Young is the son of 51-times Welsh capped Dai, who is also director of Rugby of Wasps. Playing U16s and U18s age grade for Wales, Young was part of the championship winning team in 2009.

From the age of sixteen Young trained in the Academy moving from full back to his current position of open-side flanker. He was a regular in the Welsh age grade set up playing U16, U18 and represented the U20 Junior World Cup side in Italy 2010/11. He made his Cardiff Blues senior debut against Bath Rugby in 2010 suffering a 29-19 Loss in the LV Cup.

Having already represented Wales at age-group level, Thomas Young’s performances for Wasps in the 2015 season put him on the senior squad radar.

The Wasps backrower was on standby for Wales’ tour of New Zealand, before injury cruelly cut short his season ahead of Wasps’ Premiership Semi Final in 2016.

He also underwent shoulder surgery during the 2016/17 pre-season but believes the break helped him to maintain his form, with five tries in 17 games.

The back rower has grabbed the headlines with some outstanding performances for Wasps during that season and was handed a senior Welsh squad spot for the 2017 6 Nations.

In May 2017, Young was included in the Wales squad for their two-Test summer tour where he made his debut against Tonga. Young can play blindside or openside and finished the season with a hat trick against Saracens that led to Wasps finishing top of the Aviva Premiership.
Young suffered injury setbacks during 2018/19. However, he was still named as Supporters' Player of the Season despite having only made 14 appearances.

In September 2019, he was named co-captain of Wasps alongside Dan Robson while Club captain Joe Launchbury was away with England on international duty.

In May 2020, he signed a new deal with Wasps, to date he has made 111 appearances for the club, scoring thirty tries.
