Scoring 24 tries in 38 Tests saw Dan Luger labelled as one of England’s best ever try scorers, a record he replicated on the 2001 Tour by scoring a hat-trick against Western Australia as the Lions racked up 116 points.
In the form of his life, Luger was all set for a Lions Test berth – after also scoring against Queensland Reds – when a training ground injury ruined his chances.
Luger collided with Neil Back and fractured his cheekbone, the injury curtailing his tour and ruling him out of the chance to gain a Test cap.
But Luger would go on the be part of the England squad that lifted the Rugby World Cup in 2003.
