Born in Port Elizabeth, Barnard’s rugby career kicked off at Stellenbosch University. Making his debut for the famous University as an 18 year old in 2000, the front-ranker went on to represent Western Province at U21 level but hit the International rugby scene as a star of the triumphant 2002 South African U21 side and was awarded the IRB U21 player of the year award for his outstanding performances. The aggressive tighthead made his Currie Cup debut in the same year for Western Province and Super Rugby debut in 2003 for the Cats. Spending another 2 years in Cape Town, the English qualified prop was recruited by the Northampton Saints in 2005 and named in the England Elite Player Squad. Wasps then became home for another two seasons before heading to Brive in 2009 where the French Top 14 hosts the scrumming machine.
