In just his fourth professional season, McCabe has risen to house-hold name status thanks largely to his selfless efforts in Wallaby green and gold. The 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand was an impressive show of courage and character from McCabe as he battled through the tournament with the use of only one shoulder.
McCabe’s subsequent shoulder reconstruction ruled him out of the 2012 season opener against the Force but he made a successful return the following week against the Cheetahs at Canberra Stadium, scoring a try and reproducing some of his brilliant best.
His partnership with Christian Lealiifano in 2012 was one of the most exciting 10-12 combinations in the Super Rugby competition. Both players provided Brumbies outside backs with countless opportunities to expose their opposite numbers.
Shin splints cut his international season short following the 2012 Super Rugby season, with McCabe returning to Canberra for rehab during the Rugby Championship.
Along with fellow Wallabies Dan Palmer and Stephen Moore, McCabe was named Brumbies vice-captain in 2012. Leading by example both on and off the field it was a title he worked into as the season progressed.
