The Hurricanes did the double over the Chiefs with a 31-18 win in their final home game in round 9 of Super Rugby Aotearoa. The Hurricanes struck first with an early try to lead 7-0. The Chiefs pulled three points back with a penalty, but the Hurricanes responded with their second try to take a 12-3 advantage into halftime. The Hurricanes would however start the second half with 14 players after picking up a late yellow card just before the break. The Chiefs made use of their numerical advantage with an early second half try, but the Hurricanes hit back with their third to lead 17-10. A Chiefs penalty made it a four point ball game, but again the Hurricanes bounced back with their fourth try to take control at 24-13. The Chiefs went over for a second try with 15 minutes to play to get right back into the match, but the Hurricanes would have the final say with a late try sealing the bonus point victory to keep their slim title hopes alive while condemning the Chiefs to a winless campaign.
