Six week ban for Scarlets' Johnny Williams
- 1987
Scarlets centre Johnny Williams has been suspended for six weeks following his red card for a dangerous tackle against Clermont Auvergne on the weekend.
Williams was dismissed in the 26th minute following a thumping clash of heads with Julien Heriteau when the scores were tied at 0-0.
Former Ireland international Ian Madigan, commentating on Viaplay, described the incident as "ugly", but insisted there was no intention from Williams to endanger his opponent.
"Oh, that's head on head. There's no malice from Johnny Williams. There's a late bit of footwork from the Clermont centre but that is really ugly."
Referee Eoghan Cross could be heard consulting with his officials, saying: "I'm not seeing any mitigation, are you? We have clear head on head contact. We have clear foul play. I'm seeing a high degree of danger and I'm not seeing any mitigating factors."
A dejected Williams left the field and he must wait to discover his punishment that could have a major impact on his international ambitions.
