Virimi Vakatawa was in sharp focus yesterday around the rugby world when it was announced that the talented French and Racing 92 centre’s rugby career had come to a grinding halt.
Today, the reason for this unfortunate development was revealed by the Racing 92 doctor. Vakatawa has been forced into retirement for cardiological reasons.
"I got up this morning at 8 a.m. and I knew that I would not be on the field with my teammates," a sombre Vakatawa said at a recent press conference.
The heart defect was apparently detected ahead of the 2019 World Cup and has progressively deteriorated since.
The 30 year-old turned out well over one hundred times for Racing 92 and a total of 32 times for France. His pace, power and skill will be missed on the rugby field.
