The Lions avoided a major upset as they edged the Sunwolves 40-38 in a thrilling week 5 Super Rugby encounter. The Lions ran in three first half tries to two to take a slender 19-17 lead into the break. The Lions scored from the restart of the second half to extend their lead to nine points. The spirited Sunwolves would turn the game on it's head as they crossed for the next two tries to hit the front 31-26 heading into the final quarter of the match. The Lions needed a response and did just that as they ran in two tries to reclaim the lead 40-31 with under ten minutes remaining. The Sunwolves scored with enough time for a final restart, but the Lions had done just enough to secure a narrow two point victory.
