Finn Russell's Scottish debut
- 1426
Since 2012, the rugby world has become acquainted with the mercurial talent that is Finn Russell. Beginning his working life as a stone mason, Russell rose to prominence through the Scotland U20 side, catching the eye of then Glasgow Warriors coach Gregor Townsend.
After two seasons with Warriors, Russell was called up to the Scottish touring party for their tour of North America in 2014, making his debut in the starting line-up against the USA on 7 June in Houston, Texas.
While international debuts are nervous times for the best of players, Russell put in a useful performance at fly-half; running well onto the service from scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw and igniting strong running plays from his backline with his quick and accurate passing. On defence, Russell was frequently tested by big runners but never found wanting.
Scotland emerged victors in the test by 24-6.
Russell currently has a total of 46 Scottish caps and is a definite contender for the Lions pivot position for next year’s tour of South Africa.
