Confirmed: Dan Leavy has been ruled out of the World Cup

Leinster have confirmed that openside flanker Dan Leavy will miss the Rugby World Cup in Japan after suffering a serious injury in the Champions Cup victory over Ulster on Saturday.

The 24-year-old was a second-half replacement for Sean O'Brien, but his outing was cut short after just 11 minutes, as he appeared to suffer a significant knee injury.

Leavy had an initial scan yesterday (Sunday) on a complex knee ligament injury but needs further assessment this week. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and into next season to include the Rugby World Cup.

Leavy played no part in Ireland's Six Nations campaign and had just once game under his belt this year following a calf injury.
