Comeback Kings Munster Shake Clermont With Superb Display
- 1490
As the game approached the half-hour mark it seemed as though the writing was on the wall with the score at 28-9 in favour of Clermont, but the comeback which Munster were about to unleash was something to behold.
The Irishmen were battered during the opening exchanges with dominant, commanding play from Clermont as they rushed in four tries while limiting their opponents’ score to three penalty kicks.
However, the tide began to turn when some beautiful attacking work saw Muster fullback Mike Haley dive over the line for his team’s first try.
Clermont slotted a penalty to take them to 31 while Munster answered with a few of their own as their score grew to 25.
Then, as the game moved into the final ten minutes, Munster put their feet on the throats of Clermont, forming an aggressive, forward-moving maul to crash over the line and take the lead.
They were not done yet, however, and found themselves in the same position with three minutes to play. Some more quick, efficient lineout work yielded Munster’s third and final try to take the score to 39-31.
It was a victory that will be cherished in the minds of Munster’s players, coaches and fans for some time to come as it revealed beautifully the strength and courage so obviously present within the side.
CJ Stander produced another brilliant, marauding display to earn himself the man-of-the-match award while JJ Hanranhan was superb with the boot, slotting every opportunity at goal which came his way for a personal contribution of 24 points.
The return clash in Round 3 will definitely be an interesting spectacle to watch.
