Glasgow Warriors defence coach Pete Murchie has admitted that Friday night’s Investec Champions Cup Round 4 clash with RC Toulon at Scotstoun Stadium is “winner takes all” as both clubs seek qualification for the knockout stage from Pool 3.

The United Rugby Championship club currently lie in fourth, the final qualification slot, but last-placed RC Toulon, three-times European champions, are only three points behind on two, so both could finish anywhere between third or last in the table.  

“It’s a big week for us – it’s a winner-takes-all in some respects,” he told The Offside Line. “We know what we need to do to qualify for the next round. Hopefully, it’s a big occasion and we get a good crowd creating a buzz on a Friday night. We want to make it one of those special European nights.” 

Murchie hopes the squad will channel their frustration at seeing a Euan Ferrie try ruled out by the TMO in the final play of the Round 3 loss at Exeter Chiefs last weekend to good effect. 

“Whether it was the right or wrong decision, to be honest it doesn’t really matter,” he said. “The only thing we can do is beat Toulon.  

“We don’t want the narrative to be ‘poor us’, as it won’t be poor us if we don’t put in a performance on Friday. It will just be that we haven’t qualified. The only thing we can do is put in a great performance and try to get the victory that takes us through.” 


Glasgow Warriors will be looking to avenge their 43-19 drubbing at the hands of the TOP 14 club in last season’s EPCR Challenge Cup final. 


“We’re going to give it everything,” said head coach Franco Smith. “Toulon beat us last year, which for us was a really disappointing game. We’re looking forward to going back at them this week.”  

They hope to be boosted by the return after injury of back-row forward Jack Dempsey, who has been sidelined since November with a fractured bone above an eye, and wing Kyle Steyn, who suffered a serious ankle injury in October.
