A look at some of the fastest rising young stars in the URC

The BKT United Rugby Championship has become a breeding ground across our five nations for young and up-and-coming talent and that's a trend we expect to see continue this season.

We've compiled a list of the 'Ones to watch' with some familiar faces who we think will get even better, and others who we think will really make their mark on the championship in 2024/25.

Sam Prendergast – Leinster Rugby

Known for his precise kicking, game management, and maturity beyond his years, 21-year-old Sam Prendergast has the potential to be a game-changer for Leinster. This season will be huge for the youngster.

Lorenzo Pani – Zebre Parma

A versatile backline player, Pani has shown promise with his evasive running and strong defensive skills. A rising star in the Zebre Parma ranks, the 22-year-old will be looking to add to his three tries last season.

Cameron Hanekom – Vodacom Bulls

Cameron Hanekom’s impressive physicality and dynamic play hasn’t gone unnoticed. The 22-year-old starred against Leinster in last season’s semi-final where his strong ball-carrying, high work rate, and impact at the breakdown proved to be game-changing weapons for his team.

Ben Afshar – Glasgow Warriors

Having come through the age grades for Scotland playing at Under 16 and 18s, Ashfar made his debut at scrum-half for Glasgow Warriors last season against Ulster. His quick decision-making, sharp passing, and ability to read the game make him a promising talent.

Mason Grady – Cardiff

Boasting impressive physicality, speed, and versatility in the backline, Grady’s ability to break tackles and create opportunities makes him a dynamic threat for Cardiff. He scored his first try for Wales during the 2024 Six Nations against Italy and was Cardiff’s top try-scorer last season with 8 tries.

Sacha Feinburg-Mngomezulu – DHL Stormers

One of the fastest-rising young stars in world rugby right now, Sacha Feinburg-Mngomezulu looks set to be a real impact player for the DHL Stormers this season. A creative playmaker, who can play across the backline, the sky is the limit for the 22-year-old maverick.

Will Reed – Dragons RFC

It’s worth ensuring you catch 22-year-old Will Reed in action for the Dragons this season. Reed’s composure and potential to control games in the No 10 jersey combined with an ability to create scoring opportunities for those around him make him a real prospect at fly-half.

Brian Gleeson – Munster Rugby

2023/24 Munster Academy player of the year Brian Gleeson has star quality written all over him. The powerful back-rower boasts excellent ball-carrying skills and physicality. His ability to make hard yards coupled with his imperious defence marks him out.

Cormac Izuchukwu – Ulster Rugby

Boasting remarkable athleticism, physical presence, and versatility in the second row, Cormac Izuchukwu is certainly one to watch for Ulster. Despite his relative inexperience, his towering frame and ability to contribute effectively in open play make him a rising star with immense potential.
