Kings finish strongly, working their way deep into Stormer territory and hammering at the defences. They turn down two penalty kicks in favour of running the ball, but eventually concede a turnover when they fail to retrieve the ball from a collapsed maul. Credit to the Kings for really testing this Stormers side. Kings look likely to finish bottom of the South African conference, and will have to battle the high flying Lions to retain their place in the Super 15. Thanks for joining us, see you next time!
Kings score in an identical fashion to the Stormers. They set the maul and bulldoze over from close range; Van der Walt touching down. Kings providing a formidable opposition to the Stormers. Whitehead can't convert but the lead narrows to eight.
The first try of the match comes after 64 minutes. Van den Heever delivers a perfectly weighted kick in behind the Kings defence, that clips off an opposition player and provides them with an attacking line-out five metres out. Stormers secure possession and initiate their notorious rolling maul. The maul grinds over the whitewash and Fourie touches down.
Kings secure possession on half way and build their way into the Stormers' twenty-two. The forwards work hard, picking and going from rucks and bundling over the gain line. Eventually, Vergallo moves the ball to mid-field, but Strauss is tackled high and awarded a penalty. Whitehead converts to points.
At scrum time, the Kings' front row crumble under pressure and are penalised accordingly. Pieterson steps up and opens the second half scoring with a simple kick from right in front. The second half has continued in a similar fashion to the first; plenty of attacking, and plenty of errors.
First Half Statistics: Stormers with 53% of possession and territory. 5 handling errors from the Kings but 8 from the Stormers. Kings have made 42 tackles in comparison to the Stormers' 22.
Joubert brings a close to an entertaining half of rugby and both teams trundle towards the changing rooms. Neither side has managed to dominate the other. Whilst Stormers look the superior side, they've failed to impact the score-board or statistics. Kings have been solid in defence and have refused to be bullied around the field. Interesting second half to come.
Whitehead attempts a clearance kick in his own twenty-two but the ball slips from his grasp. Stormers earn a scrum and sweep the ball to de Villiers in mid-field who barges through a number of challenges. He's brought down short of the line and the ball is recycled to Kolisi who initiates a maul. Joubert spots a Stormers infringement though and Kings relieve pressure with a boot downfield. A small victory for the visitors.
