Ward attended the Port Elizabeth's Grey High School where he played rugby union and received an inclusion in the 2012 Eastern Province Under-16 squad that participated at the Grant Khomo Week tournament.
He remained in the Eastern Province Under-19 side for the 2015 Under-19 Provincial Championship while also being named captain of the side.
In March 2016, Ward was included in a training squad for the South Africa Under-20 squad prior to the 2016 World Rugby Under 20 Championship.
He was included in the final squad for the tournament and was named the captain of the side.
After a season with the Southern Kings in Super Rugby, where he made 2 appearances, Ward moved to Durban and was selected in the Sharks 2017 Super Rugby squad.
Ward was a regular in his first season with the Sharks as he made appearances in 13 of the Sharks 16 Super Rugby matches scoring 1 try.
