Having kicked off his rugby career at Abercrave RFC, who he helped to back to back Ospreys Cup titles as a schoolboy, Howells played regional age-grade rugby for the Ospreys before stepping up from the Under-18s to make his Premiership debut with Neath while still only 17.
He followed that up with his first taste of regional rugby in two LV= Cup clashes, against the Dragons and Harlequins just weeks later. Within months he had captained Wales at Under-18 level and then become one of the youngest ever senior caps after making the starting side for the first summer test on the 2013 tour to Japan.
The former YGG Ystalyfera pupil signed a two-year deal that tied him to the Ospreys until at least summer 2018. The winger then moved to Dragons, where he made 13 appearances in his first season.
As of April 2020, he has taken the field a total of 16 times for the South Wales club and has scored 25 points.
