The former Pontypridd player made his Welsh debut in 2003 against England in the Six Nations, and subsequently played in the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Sweeney had also represented Wales at U-18, 19 and 21 levels. After four seasons with the Newport Gwent Dragons, the outhalf joined the Cardiff Blues in 2008. Sweeney has also been known to play at first centre, but the bulk of his Cardiff appearances have come at fly half
