Having played Western Province U21 and Vodacom Cup in 2006, it was only in 2008 that Wells really made a name for himself. Outstanding performances for the University of Cape Town in the Varsity Cup saw the loosehead sign with Griquas in 2011 and the Newcastle Falcons for the 2011/2012 season. Returning to South Africa in late 2012, Ashley then had a brief stint with the Pumas before returning to Western Province for the 2013 Vodacom Cup.
