Representing Western Province at age-group level from 2007-2009, Commins took up his first Professional contract with the Northampton Saints in 2010.
A London-Irish for the 2012/2013 season saw the scrumhalf leaving mid-season to help Cambridge University secure victory in the 2012 Varsity Match. Early 2013 saw a short-term contract with Wasps before signing with Ealing Trailfinders RFC.
