Born in Samoa in 1987, Sa is a former rugby league player with the Sydney Roosters and Catalan Dragons. In 2012, Sa opted to switch codes and take up union, signing a contract with London Irish in early 2013. In the league format of the game, Sa represented both Samoa and New Zealand.
