Fanning was spotted by Joe Schmidt while playing for St Mary's in the AIL. Subsequently he was brought into the Leinster setup playing for the Leinster A side. In 2014, under Matt O'Connor he made a number of appearances for Leinster in friendly games and in the Pro12. Fanning is following in his father Derek's footsteps who played for Leinster in the early 80's.
