USA name 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup

The USA has officially announced the 31-player squad for Rugby World Cup Japan 2019.

Head Coach Gary Gold has named 18 forwards and 13 backs with 10 players having previously competed in a Rugby World Cup (RWC).

Three will look ahead to their third World Cup event including Captain Blaine Scully, Eric Fry and Thretton Palamo. Scully and Fry both competed in 2011 and 2015 while Palamo competed in 2007 as the youngest player in history to appear in a RWC event and 2015.


Mark Robinson appointed New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive


Former All Black, New Zealand Rugby director, World Rugby Councillor and businessman Mark Robinson has been appointed the new Chief Executive of New Zealand Rugby.

Robinson, 45, officially takes up his new role in early January 2020, taking over from outgoing CE Steve Tew, who announced in June, that he was standing down.

Scotland Update: Bradbury to travel to Japan

Scotland back-row Magnus Bradbury will travel to Japan tomorrow (Monday) as precautionary injury cover for teammate Jamie Ritchie.

Ritchie sustained a facial injury in the national team’s 36-9 win over Georgia at Murrayfield on Friday and – following specialist scans at Spire Murrayfield Hospital – will remain in Scotland for specialist assessment, with the outcome influencing whether he remains part of the 31-man group for the Rugby World Cup which begins later this month.

Cheetahs hold on for sixth Currie Cup

 

The Cheetahs raced away from the Lions and then held on for an ultimately nervy 31-28 Currie Cup triumph in Bloemfontein, earning their sixth title.

The two sides had finished level on points in the round-robin section of the competition but there was far more between them in Saturday's final.

A knee sprain sustained in South Africa's win over Japan on Friday will not stop Trevor Nyakane being ready for the Rugby World Cup.
 
 

South Africa expect Trevor Nyakane to be fit for their Rugby World Cup opener despite a knee injury sustained against Japan on Friday.

Prop Nyakane was sent on for Frans Malherbe in the second half of the 41-7 victory in Kumagaya but was forced off just 14 minutes later.

However, the 30-year-old did not sustain a serious injury and is expected to be available when the Springboks begin their World Cup campaign against reigning champions New Zealand on September 21. Read more

Bordeaux, Lyon stay perfect in Top 14

Bordeaux-Begles and Lyon each recorded impressive away successes to maintain winning starts to the new Top 14 season.

The two sides, separated by 21 points last term, with Bordeaux missing out on the play-offs, each have 13 points through three matches, having won at Castres and Toulon respectively on Saturday.

Bordeaux scored the only two tries of the first half against Castres – through Scott Higginbotham and Matthieu Jalibert – but they still trailed at the end of an entertaining first 40 minutes.

Lyon were far more comfortable in a 20-6 success at Toulon, despite seeing both Patrick Sobela and Jeremie Maurouard sent to the bin late on. Read more

Wallabies defeat Samoa in final run out pre World Cup

Wallabies have emerged 34-15 victors over Manu Samoa in a bruising encounter at Bankwest Stadium in Sydney.



The Wallabies scored six tries to Samoa’s two in blustery conditions in the final match for both nations ahead of the game's showpiece event in Japan later this month.


The home side raced to a 22-3 half time lead, but conceded the first two tries of the second stanza to hold a slender 7-point lead as the game clock ticked down inside the final 10 minutes. Read more

England's Vunipola & Nowell to miss at least two World Cup games

Eddie Jones does not expect to have Mako Vunipola available until England face Argentina or France in the Rugby World Cup pool stage.
 
 
 

Mako Vunipola will miss at least the first two of England's games at the Rugby World Cup, coach Eddie Jones has confirmed.

Prop Vunipola suffered a setback in his hamstring injury and was absent as England defeated Italy 37-0 at St James' Park on Friday in their final warm-up match ahead of the tournament in Japan. Full story
