Super Rugby’s Most Lethal Attackers & Stalwart Defenders

With Super Rugby on ice for the time being, we examine the stats to determine who has stood out in the past 7 rounds on defence and attack.

Crusaders' flank Tom Christie has proved himself to be far-&-away the best tackler of the competition thus far with 106 tackles under his belt, giving him an average of 17.67 per game.

Other notable efforts in the tackle stats see Liam Wright (Reds) and Mike Stolberg (Sunwolves) with 88 and 79 tackles respectively.

Chiefs' openside Lachlan Boshier has been unparalleled with his defensive capabilities at the breakdown, his efforts culminating in a total of 17 turnovers (averaging 3.4 per game).

Du’Plessis Kirifi (Hurricanes) has also been a tough customer in this department, making 11 steals, followed by Marnus Schoeman (Lions) and Michael Hooper (Waratahs) with 9 apiece.

Matt Philip (Rebels) and Guido Petti Pagadizaval (Jaguares) have been towers of strength at lineout time, each managing to steal 6 opposition throws.

On attack, Harry Wilson (Reds) has been busy, topping the carries count with 91 and earning an average of 13 per game.

Warrick Gelant (Bulls) and Aphelele Fassi (Sharks) have also put their hands up regarding this stat with 78 and 75 carries respectively.

Fassi and the Blues’ Mark Telea have been, arguably, this year’s competition’s most exciting attackers.

Fassi has racked up the most running metres in the tournament so far with 622 (averaging  a massive 88.86 per game). Telea trails the Sharks fullback by 63 metres with a total of 559.

When it comes to defenders beaten, however, Telea takes the crown with 54, giving him an average of 7.71 per match. Fassi sits in second place in this category with 33 defenders beaten and an average of 6.25.
