Rassie Erasmus provides an update on Duane Vermeulen

SA Rugby’s Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus has provided an update on loose forward Duane Vermeulen.

Speaking to the media after the South Africa A team announcement, Erasmus said that there is an “outside chance” that Duane Vermeulen could be available for the third Test.

The Springbok no.8 has been busy with his rehabilitation on a serious ankle injury that required surgery and the Springbok Director has doubts over whether he will be available for the first two test matches against the tourists.

'His bubble will work very much the same to Alun Wyn Jones’ bubble because Alun Wyn is apparently close to joining them' Erasmus said and in doing so beat Warren Gatland to the news that the Lions lock could link up with the squad.

'Duane is maybe in the mix for the last Test match.' Erasmus added.

'So, the way Alun Wyn will join the Lions’ bubble, Duane will very much do the same with us, if both of them obviously are fit.'

'We have protocol for that which is guided by that MAG, the medical advisory group. Yes, there is an outside chance for Duane, as with Alun Wyn. We are not banking on that.'

The South Africans have named a strong team to take on the British and Irish Lions with one-test back-rower Jasper Wiese starting in the #8 jumper.

Kwagga Smith started in that role in the Springboks' first test of 2021 while Dan du Preez, who is another option in the position, is currently in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.
