Erasmus names 17 uncapped and 5 overseas players to the Bok squad

New Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus promised some surprises with his selection of players for the squad to take on England and Wales in the coming weeks - and he certainly delivered. Erasmus has named no less than 17 uncapped players to the squad as well as a number of overseas players.
SA Rugby granted Erasmus special permission to include overseas players with fewer than the required 30 Test caps where it was believed that there was insufficient depth in SA.
Bismark du Plessis (Montpellier), Duane Vermeulen (Toulon), Faf de Klerk (Sale Sharks), Willie le Roux (Wasps) and Frans Steyn (Montpellier) will return to play in the green and gold. Scrumhalf Cameron Wright (Sharks), Embrose Papier (Bulls) and wing Aphiwe Dyantyi (wing) have earned a spot on the squad despite it being their first year of Super Rugby.
Notable exclusions are hooker Adrian Strauss, who was expected to come out of retirement, and Warren Whiteley.
It has been a while since the following players have been seen in the Bok squad: Bismarck du Plessis was last included in 2015, Le Roux and Faf de Klerk in 2016, and Frans Steyn in 2017.
“I am confident that we have a strong group of players from which we will be able to select a very competitive team for each of the four Test matches in June," said Erasmus.
The squad will consist of about 40 players and after the first week of training, it will be reduced to about 30.
Fans will have to wait until Monday to find who will lead the squad for the upcoming series of matches.
