Super Rugby Unlocked launched over the weekend with wins for all three host teams, the Bulls, the Sharks and the Cheetahs in the first local competition since rugby was halted in mid-March because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The opening game of the competition saw the Sharks and Lions lock horns on Friday evening.
Springbok flyhalf Curwin Bosch kicked four successful penalty goals to steer the Sharks to a close-fought 19-16 win over the Lions.
The closely fought match saw the Sharks hold a 13-3 lead at the break. Werner Kok scored the only try of the first half with the Sharks making the most of their scoring opportunities to convert their early pressure into points via the kicking boot of Bosch, who has a solid game in the No 10 black jersey.
However, it was his opposite number who produced a bit of magic as Elton Jantjies found Jamba Ulengo unmarked with a superb cross-kick for the winger to score in the corner.

Jantjies also added the extra points on offer with his successful conversion from the touchline (13-10).
Bosch and Jantjies then traded penalties after his kick to set up Ulengo before Jantjies hit the upright with a close-range effort in the closing stages, which would have levelled the scores as the home team just managed to hang on for a win.
