A look ahead of the Currie Cup Final

The Currie Cup final is set to take place tomorrow and the Lions will lock horns with Sharks for a sixth time in a final, to compete for Currie Cup honours at the home of the Lions in Johannesburg.

So far the teams have met five times, three times in Johannesburg, and twice in Durban with the home side having won three, the last at home with their other two victories achieved in Durban.

The Sharks’ two victories were snatched away from home at Ellis Park.

Sharks lost just one match in the season – 24-27 to Northern Lions when Naas Botha kicked five drops and four penalties.

Sharks dominated the first half thanks to the forwards and the boot of Robert du Preez.

Pieter Müller tackled Pieter Hendriks out at the corner flag.

Six minutes before the final whistle Theo van Rensburg missed a relatively easy penalty.

Sharks dominated up front, at least till Balie Swart switched to tighthead to counter Guy Kebble. Sharks had the better of possession and territory but, even though they had the wind in the second half, they faded – perhaps because of inferior fitness, perhaps because they persisted with 10-man rugby.

It was not a match of highlights and both Lions tries were made possible by Sharks mistakes.

At one stage Lions led 15-13 but two tries by the Rolls Royce of fullbacks, André Joubert, in the last 20 minutes set the seal on this great Sharks Sharks victory.

It was a great season for Sharks as they won all 15 of their Currie Cup matches, scoring 112 tries and 792 points.

There were quarterfinals and then semifinals that year and Lions beat Western Province and Northern Lions en route to the final, which was then something of an anticlimax for them.

It was a sad time for Sharks, this final.

They were saying farewell to Gary Teichmann, André Joubert, and Henry Honiball, who was not playing because of injury, and Ian McIntosh, and they got a hiding in a match in which they were favourites to win.

It was a World Cup year and so the players in the Springbok squad were withdrawn from the semifinals and the final of the Currie Cup.

Young flyhalf Elton Jantjies was outstanding on the day, kicking everything asked of him and marshaling his troops expertly. He had the experience and know-how of Carlos Spencer to call on, and it showed.

While Sharks fullback Pat Lambie seems to be a long-term option for the Springboks’ No. 10 slot, Jantjies was tipped by many to be an ideal candidate.

Late in the first half Springbok prop CJ van der Linde was sin-binned for dangerous play, but the Lions did not concede a single point while playing with only 14 men.
