After almost three minutes of extra time, the ball is stripped in contact, and booted into touch. The Highlander's penalty count proved too high in the end. Chiefs grind out the win and will be satisfied with the result. They were ultimately the more clinical team and managed to dominate in the second half. The Highlanders return to the drawing board ahead of next weekend's clash with the Reds. The Dundedin team now sit bottom of the table, and are the only team win-less this season.

Highlanders concede a penalty at scrumtime. Bronson Murray is singled out as the guilty party. The Chiefs immediately opt for the posts and Anascombe obliges.

Messam tears off the back of a scrum in the Highlanders' twenty-two. He crashes into contact and the ball is recycled. Horrell takes it at pace and tries to force his way over the Highlanders' line, but the ball is knocked from his grasp by a big Hoeata hit! The referee consults his TMO, but the try is denied.

Chiefs attack from mid-field, and fling the ball wide, only for it to be intercepted by Colin Slade. Slade looks to be through but the referee pulls play back for an offside offence. Anascombe attempts the ensuing penalty but pulls it wide of the upright.

Slade hits it wide once again from 25 metres out. The flyhalf's kicking form has let him down this week and has been the difference between the two teams so far.

Chiefs apply pressure in the Highlanders 22. But the Highlanders' defence holds out and they force a knock-on. The ball is cleared into touch and the half-time whistle sounds. Despite having held a minority of possession, the Chiefs have been more clinical in attack. Highlanders have fought well but are finding it difficult to impose themselves on the the reigning Super 15 champions.. Interesting 40 minutes still to come..

The Chiefs earn another penalty just inside halfway. Anscombe slots it effortlessly, continuing his impeccable kicking form. Highlander's desperately need to improve discipline, and avoid the flyhalf's ruthless kicking boot. Highlanders enjoying 78% of possession so far this half.
