Lionel Campergue, born on November 24, 1987, is a French-born Portuguese rugby union player known for his role as a Hooker. His rugby journey has taken him through various clubs, showcasing his talent and dedication to the sport.
Campergue's club career began with Pau Espoirs when he was just 17 years old in 2004. His dedication and skill led to his debut for the ProD2 side in 2011, marking the beginning of a four-year stint with the French side. He later made a move to Colomiers.
During his first season with Colomiers, Campergue played a pivotal role in helping the team achieve promotion to the ProD2. However, after a season with limited appearances, he decided to join Fédérale 1 side CA Périgueux.
Campergue spent two productive years at CA Périgueux before making a switch to rival team AS Macon Rugby. Despite making only 14 appearances for the Fédérale 1 side, his talent was evident.
In 2016, Campergue joined US Cognac and contributed significantly during his one-season tenure before the team merged with Rugby Athletic Club Angérien, forming Union Cognac Saint-Jean-d'Angély. Campergue continued to shine for another four years with this club.
His journey eventually led him to Bassin d'Arcachon in 2021, where he continued to impress with his rugby skills. After the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Campergue announced his retirement from professional rugby.
On the international stage, Campergue's Portuguese roots paved the way for his debut with the Portuguese national team in 2010, where he faced the USA. His contributions were instrumental in helping Portugal qualify for their second Rugby World Cup appearance.
Ahead of the World Rugby Cup 2023, Lionel Campergue has been named in the squad for Portugal, marking another milestone in his rugby career.
