Engelbrecht attended the iconic Grey High School in the Eastern Cape until 2007, his form with Grey lead to a call-up to represent Eastern Province at the Under-18 Craven Week – held in Stellenbosch in 2007.
After finishing high school, Engelbrecht moved to Cape Town to join the Western Province academy. He represented them in the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup competitions between 2009 and 2011, before moving to Pretoria to join the Blue Bulls ahead of the 2012 season.
He established himself in the Bulls Super Rugby team during the 2012 Super Rugby season, scoring three tries in seventeen appearances in the competition. He broke into the national team and signed a contract extension in June 2013 to keep him at the Blue Bulls until 2016.
After one season with the Bulls Engelbecht was called into the Springbok squad and made his debut for South Africa on 18 August 2012 against Argentina, coming on as a 70th-minute substitute.
He made a further eleven appearances for the Springboks during 2013 and was offered a core contract by the Springboks for 2014, but failed to feature in any matches for the national team.
He also missed out on selection for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, but did play in a match for a World XV against a South Africa XV in a warm-up match prior to the tournament.
In January 2016 he announced he will be joining Ospreys for the rest of their season after missing out on the Bulls Super Rugby squad, making 4 appearances during that season.
Engelbrecht signed for Japanese Top League side Toyota Industries Shuttles for their 2017/18 campaign.
In December the Stormers confirmed that Engelbrecht would rejoin the franchise for teh 2018 Super Rugby season
Englebrecht made 20 appearances for the Stormers between the 2018 & 2019 seasons before signing with Clermont as cover for the Rugby World Cup.
Following the World Cup, Engelbrecht signed with the Sunwolves for the 2020 Super Rugby season.
