Starting his rugby at Afrikaans Boys High School, Potgieter went on to play for the Bulls from 2004-2007 representing the province at U20 level, in the Vodacom and Currie Cup.
Craving Super Rugby, the fly-half then moved to the Cheetahs in 2008 for two seasons before retuning to the Bulls in 2010 and then signing with the Sharks for Super Rugby in 2011. JL then put pen to paper with Bayonne for the 2012/2013 season where he remained for another year before being recruited by Dax.
South Africa born fly-half Jacques-Louis Potgieter departed Lyon for Perpignan for the 2016/17 season.
Potgieter helped Perpignan get promoted to the Top 14 ahead for the 2018/19 season.
Having done so Potgieter announced his retirement from all forms of the game.
