Gareth Steenson, born on April 5, 1984, is a former Irish rugby union player who primarily played as a fly-half. Steenson began his professional career at Cornish Pirates before joining the Exeter Chiefs in 2010.
Originally from Dungannon, Northern Ireland, Steenson's early aspirations were to play for Ulster and Ireland. However, limited opportunities led him to seek a fresh start, and he made his way to England to play for Rotherham Titans. He impressed during his first season and was subsequently signed by the Cornish Pirates, where he continued to showcase his talents.
In 2008, the Exeter Chiefs signed Steenson, recognizing his skill as a fly-half and goalkicker. He quickly settled into the team and emerged as one of the most accurate goalkickers in England and Europe. In 2010, he played a crucial role in Exeter's promotion to the Premiership, scoring a remarkable 24 points in the Championship final against Bristol.
Throughout his career at Exeter, Steenson proved to be a valuable asset to the team, becoming the club's all-time leading points-scorer with over 2,500 points. He played a pivotal role in the Chiefs' success, including their Premiership title victory in 2017. Steenson kicked the winning penalty in the final against Wasps, securing Exeter's first-ever Premiership title.
Steenson's skill and accuracy as a goalkicker were recognized when he narrowly missed out on the Golden Boot award for the 2012-13 Premiership season by just one point. He was awarded the Gilbert Golden Boot in 2016, an esteemed prize given to the leading goal-kicker in the Premiership.
In addition to his playing career, Steenson ventured into coaching and joined Plymouth Albion as an assistant coach, focusing on their attack. He retired from playing at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season but remained involved in the sport through coaching.
