In Dave Gannon, Connacht have a lock with both technical and leadership qualities. The former UCD man captained Ireland’s Under 21’s in the World Under 21 Championship, where Ireland lost to New Zealand in the final. His impressive form for the Irish underage secured him a move to Connacht in 2005, for whom he played for until 2008. Gannon left Connacht for New Zealand in 2008 where he joined Air New Zealand Cup side Southland. Gannon enjoyed his stay in New Zealand, where he won the Ranfurly Shield with Southland. Next for Gannon was a move to Exeter Chiefs in 2009, where he spent two seasons before rejoining Connacht in 2011.
