Born in Windsor, England, Shepherd has spent much of his life in Australia and attended Macquarie University. Having grown up in Sydney, Shepherd went on to represent the New South Wales Waratahs ages just 20. Primarily operating from the fullback berth, Shepherd has also featured on the wing. After a solitary Super Rugby season with the 'Tahs, Shepherd joined the up and coming Western Force and during his time in Western Australia made his debut for the Wallabies. In 2012 he moved to Northampton Saints only for the contract to be torn up within a matter of days of his arrival due to concerns over a niggling injury. Shepherd was then taken on board by Sale Sharks.
