A Gloucester native, Hazell is a lively openside flanker of the scavenger breed. Since making his debut at the age of 19 he has developed a reputation as a hard nosed flanker who is deceptively quick over the ground. Generally first at every breakdown, Hazell's unique skills set earned him a call up to the England national side in 2003 when he toured Australia and New Zealand. His first full cap came the following November when he lined up against Canada.
