The tall lock was identified as a future star from an early age and he captained South Africa Under-19 and U21 to world titles. His leadership qualities and impressive work in the line-outs made him a superstar at age-group level. He went on to claim a regular place in the Sharks Super Rugby and Currie Cup sides, and played a major part in helping the team to the Currie cup title in 2010.
The Test match lock struggled with a couple of injuries, but has moved to Saracens to make a fresh start at his career with the English club.
Unfortunately, after suffering a number of concussions, the Saracens lock retired from professional rugby in October 2016.
