Fitzpatrick broke through at local club Westoe, before scoring 13 tries in 22 games for Blaydon during the 2009-10 campaign. Earning an England Counties call-up later that year, Fitzpatrick was then brought on board full-time for the Falcons ahead of the 2010-11 campaign after a number of guest appearances for the Falcons Development XV. Fitzpatrick established himself as a first team regular during the 2011-12 season, making 25 appearances in the process. This included a man-of-the-match performance in the televised 9-9 draw at home to Harlequins. The steely centre made 13 appearances the following year including a start in the British & Irish Cup final.
