Having represented Wales at Under 19 and 21 levels, Charteris made his senior debut against South Africa in 2004. Since then he amassed more than 50 caps for the national team. In 2003, he signed for Newport Gwent Dragons and ran out 142 times for them before moving to USA Perpignun in 2012 for two season which saw him gain 24 caps. In 2014 he made a big move to Racing 92 where he has .
He consistently been selected for the National side and represented Wales at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Charteris was selected for his second World Cup in 2015 and kept his strong partnership with Alan Wyn Jones for the tournament.
His 6 Nations debut was against Scotland in 2009 at BT Murrayfield, and he was a member of the grand slam winning side of 2012. He missed out in 2013 but appeared in all the Championships since.
Charteris won his 50th cap against the All Blacks in autumn 2014.
He played in the Champions Cup final last season which Racing lost but not in the TOP-14 final which they won as he was on tour with Wales in New Zealand where he played in two tests. Started three of the autumn internationals.
On 23 November 2015, it was announced Charteris would join Bath on a three-year contract.
Charteris retired at the end of the 2018/19 season and took up a new role as specialist line-out coach for Bath Rugby.
