Sweeney's return to New Zealand - after six years in Japan playing for Kyuden Voltex and Munakata Sanix Blues - has been eventful to say the least.
The 32-year-old utility back wore Chiefs colours again when they won the inaugural Brisbane Tens tournament in February; signed a two-year deal with Waikato in May; and almost contributed to an almighty upset when New Zealand's Provincial Barbarians pushed the British and Irish Lions to the brink in June.
Sweeney is back where it all began with eyes on 100 Waikato caps after being unveiled as captain for 2017 Mitre Cup campaign.
