Gibson started his professional Ruby career for Canterbury in June 1993 and went on to playing 80 matches for the Christchurch side. In his 80 caps for Canterbury he scored 35 tries and won 2 New Zealand Provincial Championships in 1997 and 2001.
He was also part of the Crusader Super Rugby squads from 1996 and 2002. During his time with the Crusaders he earned 78 appearances, scoring 14 tries and won 4 Super Rugby titles in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002.
Gibson represented New Zealand 19 times between 1999 and 2002 and he was included in the 1999 World Cup squad.
Gibson started his coaching career with Glasgow Warriors and later joined The Crusaders as an Assistant Coach from 2008. He later joined The Waratahs as an Assistant Coach in 2013 under then Head Coach Michael Cheika.
Following Cheika's departure to the Australian national side, in 2015, Gibson was named as his replacement as Head Coach ahead of the 2016 Super Rugby season.
The former All Blacks midfielder guided the New South Wales club to a semi-final appearance in 2018 before signing a new deal to remain with the club until 2020.
The Waratahs failed to reach the playoffs in 2019 and Gibson opted not to see out his final year of his contract.
